Who owns Johns Hopkins Health System?
The Johns Hopkins Health System is a not-for-profit, integrated health care system that includes six hospitals and more than 40 clinics in the Baltimore/Washington region. Dr. William Osler founded the organization as an independent entity from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine on April 1, 1892. Today, it has become one of Maryland’s largest employers, with over 4,000 employees at its five facilities located throughout Anne Arundel County.
The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions are a world-renowned academic medical center with more than 1,600 physicians in hospitals, clinics, nursing centers, research institutes, and other facilities. The institution is also home to one of the nation’s most extensive teaching programs in medicine. It has been ranked among the top 10 most influential institutions by U.S. News & World Report since it was founded in 1889; recently, it was listed as the fifth-best hospital in America. In addition, Hopkins ranks first nationally in clinical care, second in fundamental science discoveries, third in patient safety, and fourth overall according to Thomson Reuters’ “Best Hospitals.”
In recent years, however, some have questioned whether this reputation should be extended beyond the walls of Baltimore City or even Maryland itself.
