Federal Employees Are Getting Paid, But They Don’t Know It

People who work for us Federal employees are people who work for the U.S. government in any capacity. They include both civilian and military personnel.

Do federal employees get good benefits?

Yes. Do they know it? No. This is a problem that needs to be addressed immediately. The short version of the story is this: federal workers are getting paid more than ever before in history.

And yet, many don’t realize how much money their government employers pay them each year. Some people think there isn’t any salary at all! That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Do federal employees get free health insurance?

Federal workers have access to one of the best medical plans available anywhere. If you work for Uncle Sam, your employer pays 100 percent of the cost of your premiums. You also receive full coverage for hospitalization and major surgical procedures. There’s even dental care covered by most FEHBP plans—a benefit not offered under Medicare or private insurers.

If you’re new to working for the U.S. Government, you may wonder whether your employer provides health insurance. Most federal agencies offer health benefits as part of an employee retirement package called FERS. For example, when you retire after 20 years of service with the Social Security Administration, you’ll automatically become eligible for a monthly pension check plus lifetime health benefits through SSA’s FEHB program.

Can federal employees have a second job?

Yes, as long as it doesn’t conflict with their official duties. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has issued regulations that allow federal workers to engage in outside employment without jeopardizing their government positions or violating the Hatch Act. However, OPM makes clear that “the mere fact that an employee is engaged in some form of private enterprise does not mean he/she must be free from all governmental regulation and control.”

You can certainly take on additional income while still collecting your regular paycheck from the feds.

However, you must first decide what type of employment would suit you best.

There are plenty of ways to earn extra cash outside of your government agency. Some examples include:

• Working for yourself – As long as you meet specific requirements, you could start your own business and hire others to help run it for you. Or maybe you want to open up your restaurant, barbershop, or beauty salon. Whatever company you choose, make sure it will generate enough revenue so you won’t need to rely solely upon your government paycheck.

• Freelance writing – Many writers moonlight as freelancers, offering services like copywriting, proofreading, editing, web content development, graphic design, etc., online via freelance websites such as Upwork, Guru

Do federal employees get bonuses ?

No. But they should. They deserve every penny they get. After all, government salaries aren’t exactly high these days. According to data compiled by USA Today, average annual earnings for federal workers peaked back during World War II, when the top earner made $90,000 per year. By comparison, the current median wage among civilian workers nationwide hovers around $50,000 annually. In addition to paying higher salaries than they did 30 years ago, today’s federal workforce gets annual performance awards based on merit increases. These raises range between 3% and 5%, depending on the organization’s length of service and level. But keep in mind, these aren’t just handouts; they represent real financial rewards. They provide added compensation beyond base pay and top-off low starting wages.

Plus, they come along with other perks that might interest you. Federal employees also receive generous healthcare coverage. This includes life insurance, disability payments, dental care, vision care, prescription drug costs, medical transportation expenses, and more. It even covers mental health counseling if needed. And since most federal retirees qualify for Medicare at age 65, this means they don’t have to worry about out-of-pocket spending for doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital stays, or any other major medical bills.
