Many people have the misconception that a language is an easy skill to acquire. While this may be true for children, several languages can be challenging to master both conversationally and through writing. The following are five of the most complex languages to learn based on evaluation indexes.

Why Are Some Languages Harder Than Others?

Some languages are more complicated than others, and the reasons vary. On the surface, it might seem like languages with fewer letters and simpler grammar structures would be easier to learn, but this is not true in some cases. Learning a language requires an understanding of both its spoken and written forms, and the written form may be more complicated, while the spoken form may be more simple. Some languages require more memorization, such as Chinese and Japanese.

Additionally, some languages have complex grammar structures. Languages with an SOV (subject-object-verb) structure, such as Korean and Chinese, require learners to understand a whole new way of learning how sentences are constructed. Some languages have vastly different verb conjugations and similar cases for nouns, such as Arabic and Turkish. Other languages have irregular verb conjugations which make memorization more challenging, such as Italian and German. Despite the fact that it is easier to learn languages with fewer letters, all other factors considered (grammar structures, verb conjugations, cases of nouns and irregular verbs) English was one of the hardest languages to learn as a second language, with only 8.2% of students stating they were successful in doing so. Students of French and Spanish, on the other hand, were more likely to be successful than those who learned English (18.4% and 20.7%, respectively). As mentioned earlier, the most challenging aspects of learning a new language are grammar and pronunciation for second language learners. Therefore, those who struggle with these aspects are likely to have the most difficulties when it comes to learning a new language.

What are the Most Difficult Languages to Learn?

Italian is one of the most difficult languages to learn. One reason for this is because Italians speak very quickly and don’t enunciate, which can make it very difficult to understand. Also, because Italian is such a grammatically structured language, many grammar rules can cause confusion for learners. Italian also lacks irregular verb conjugations, which makes learning this language more difficult. On top of that, it is also a particularly difficult language to study abroad because the accent can make things even more complicated. Other complex languages include Spanish, French, German, and Russian.

Have You Ever Wondered Which Language is the Hardest to Speak Fluently?

The hardest language to speak fluently in Chinese. The reason for this is that one of the hardest aspects of speaking a language is being able to pronounce all of the different sounds that the letters make. For example, in English, the letter “s” sounds like the sound “sh”. Similarly, the “h” sound has three different variations which makes it very difficult to pronounce. For example, the pronunciation of the letter “h” in English is either “hear”, “hate”, or “hat”. Unfortunately, because of this complexity, many English speakers have difficulty pronouncing other languages and using correct grammar. In China, the national language is Mandarin Chinese. However, there are two other dialects which make up most of the language, Cantonese and Shanghainese. Mandarin is the easiest Chinese language to speak because there are only 13 sounds. Unfortunately, it does have a few quirks that make it difficult for the English speaker to learn. The language is more literal in nature and also has many phrases that are difficult to understand. Luckily, the Chinese people can easily translate the words they don’t understand into Mandarin.
