Soap making

The easiest way to make soap ever!

How soap works

Soap is made from the saponification of fats or oils that have been mixed with water in an alkaline solution called “lye.” The mixture becomes thick when heated and then cools down again into a solid mass. This process takes place over several hours. Soaps are usually sold by weight rather than volume because they’re so heavy. A pound of liquid soap contains about 1/3 cup of oil plus some water.

The key ingredients for soap-making

Sodium hydroxide is one of the essential components of any bar of soap. It gives the soap its basic pH level, which helps kill bacteria by making them more acidic than normal skin cells. Sodium hydroxide also acts as a detergent, breaking down fats and proteins so they’re easier to remove from the skin’s surface. The other main ingredient needed for soap-making is potassium carbonate, which adds fragrance and color to the final.

How to make soap at home

Making homemade soap requires some patience and practice. If you’re new to soap making, start small. Make one batch of soap using just one ingredient like castile soap or glycerin instead of vegetable shortening. According to Barrett, once you’ve mastered that technique, try adding more complex recipes such as those containing herbs, citrus peel, essential oils, colorants, fragrance, exfoliant, etc.

Methods/ Procedure for soap-making

Ingredients and equipment

1 cup sodium hydroxide 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 2 cups distilled white vinegar three tablespoons glycerin one tablespoon fragrance Oil

Mix until thoroughly combined. Pour mixture into a container and let sit overnight. Remove from container and cut into bars. Let cool before packaging. Store in refrigerator.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup sodium hydroxide 2 cups vegetable shortening three tablespoons glycerin five teaspoons fragrance Oil Blend Ingredients: 10 drops lavender Essential Oils blend until combined. Add more or less depending on how strong you like your scent. Mixing Instructions: Put the shortening in a bowl and put the lye in another bowl. Stir them together until thoroughly blended. Then stir in the glycerin.

Making Soap: A Basic Chemical Reaction

Soap making involves the chemical reaction between lye and fats, oils, or waxes. The process begins with mixing these three ingredients in water until they form a thick paste-like mixture called “lather.”

This step can be done by hand using a wooden spoon or spatula, but it’s also possible to use electric mixers for this purpose.

Basic Methods of Making Soap

There are two methods for making homemade soaps; cold-processed and hot-processed. Cold processing involves using an oil that has been heated to about 180 degrees Fahrenheit before being added to the lye solution. Hot-processing uses raw materials such as coconut oil, olive oil, palm kernel oil, etc., which have not yet reached their boiling point when mixed with the lye solution.

Melt and Pour Soap Making Method

The melt and pour method uses pre-made bars of soap that have been melted down into liquid form. You can add any number of fragrances, colors, or other ingredients before pouring it out onto trays or molds. There are two main types of molds for soap making: slab molds and block molds. Both come in various sizes and shapes. They are usually made of plastic, though there are metal versions too. It’s an inexpensive way to make soap because you don’t need to buy expensive equipment like a double boiler. However, this method does not produce as high a yield as some other ways do.

Cold Process Soap Making Method

The cold process is one of the easiest ways to make soap because there’s no heat involved. It also produces an excellent bar that will last longer than other types of soap. To begin this method, choose high-quality vegetable oil and lye. You’ll want to start by measuring out 1/2 cup of water per pound of fat used. Then combine these ingredients in a large bowl. Stir until all of the lye dissolves completely.

Warning

Please do not eat any part of the soap that comes out of the mold because it contains sodium hydroxide. If you accidentally swallow some of this liquid, seek medical attention immediately. Do not breathe in fumes produced by the lye solution as well. Wear gloves while handling the lye solution. Also, wear goggles if working near an open flame.

Soap making for beginners: Safety

You’re going to want some gloves, goggles, and maybe earplugs. Lye burns. A lot.

And finally, patience. The whole thing takes time. Don’t expect instant gratification.
