Medical Implants

When it comes to the medical world, there are no boundaries. Science is constantly changing and advancing in ways we could have never imagined. A doctor’s job is not just to diagnose an illness but also to cure it. With these advances, doctors can provide patients with better options for treatment that other methods cannot offer. The next time you find yourself in a doctor’s office, here are some things your health care professional might suggest.

What is an implant?

An implant is a synthetic material inserted into the body, and an implant is a prosthesis implanted to restore a lost function or replace a missing structure. Implants are most often used for reconstructive surgery on the nose, ear, chin, or genitals. There are many different kinds of implants, including those made from silicone and those made from titanium. Implants are the main difference between biological and synthetic implants.

Medical implants include artificial joints, pacemakers, and intraocular lenses. Implants that perform a life-sustaining function, such as a dialysis machine, are called real artificial organs. Other implants, such as an artificial heart, can be implanted to perform a vital function in the body and may need to be sterilized between uses, although one of these devices is also not considered a total artificial organ. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classifies an artificial eye as a medical device. Medical implants are, in essence, precisely what they sound like: objects that are implanted into the body to aid in the recovery of the patient. These vary from pacemakers to artificial joints to stents, and so on. However, there have been some discoveries of implants in recent years that seem to work in previously unknown ways. One such implant was found when a woman in Texas had an ileostomy. For those who are not aware, this is a surgery usually performed to remove a large amount of the intestinal tract so that there is a better chance of long-term recovery. However, the woman did not have a complete ileostomy, so she needed an implant placed in her stomach.

The surgery took place in 2014, and the team of surgeons went about removing all of the muscles from the woman’s abdomen. A team of doctors then placed a small piece of metal inside her stomach and connected it to a her ileostomy to keep the fluid inside her body. The implant is called a laparoscopic ileostomy plug, and it has several remarkable properties. The team was able to see that the plug could keep any fluid inside the woman’s body because no leaks were observed throughout the entire time. The team also found that the woman had no issues eating, and when she was on the toilet, the hole through which the fluid was being pumped was not revealed because of the structure of the plug.

Most Medical Implants Have Never Been Tested For Safety

Many people have medical implants, which are devices inserted directly into the body, but most of these devices have never been tested for safety. In the past, the FDA has been negligent in requiring any testing from medical device manufacturers. For example, in 1991, new and existing medical devices were not required to be registered with the FDA until 2003. It is safe to say that medical implants have not been tested for safety since the 1980s. This lack of testing has contributed significantly to many severe problems with medical implants, including lead poisoning, muscle and nerve damage, severe scarring and tissue death, and even early death. If these complications were known and people were aware of them, the FDA could have required device manufacturers to warn about these risks.

This is all about medical implants, which you must know!
