Black forest is a German dessert that combines cherries, almonds, kirschwasser syrup, and coconut flakes into a moist sponge cake topped with sour cherry jam or sweetened condensed milk. In Germany, black forest cake was initially called Schwarzwaldkuchen, which means “black forest cake.”
The name comes from its dark color due to the addition of cocoa powder. In English-speaking countries, this type of cake is known as Cherry Bakewell Tart.
